Begin by removing weeds and diseased debris, inspecting drainage and testing the soil. Add approximately one-quarter to one inch of finished compost when organic matter is needed, but use a balanced soil mixture—not compost alone—to replace several inches of lost volume.

Avoid walking on the soil, minimize unnecessary tillage and keep the surface covered with plants, mulch or a cover crop. Rotate plant families when possible and record which crops and problems occurred in each bed.

With measured amendments and regular maintenance, good raised-bed soil can become more stable and productive over time rather than needing to be rebuilt every year.
